Adam Smith’s Methodology：Imagination, Rhetoric, and Rene Descartes

以往大多数关于亚当·斯密方法论（Adam Smith’s methodology）的研究，除少数例外，都相当强调牛顿物理学（Newtonian physics）和休谟式经验主义（Humean empiricism）不可否认的影响。

本书认为，至少同样重要的还有其他来源：斯密本人的教诲性修辞（didactic rhetoric）以及勒内·笛卡尔（René Descartes）的方法论著作（methodological writings）。

斯密于1748年开始其公共生涯（public life），在爱丁堡讲授修辞学（rhetoric）。在此期间，他还撰写了一部天文学史（history of astronomy），追溯其从神话思维（mythical thought）时代到笛卡尔的发展（后来纳入牛顿的思想）。

在《天文学史》（History of Astronomy）中，他更关心的不是理论的真值（truth value），而是理论通过将众多现象系统地归结到少数几条统一原则（unifying principles）之下来安抚人类想象力（human imagination）的能力。

因此，在《道德情操论》（The Theory of Moral Sentiments）出版之前，笛卡尔与修辞学是青年斯密思考的核心。

因此，对斯密已出版著作的任何方法论考察（methodological examination），都必须被界定为一个透过笛卡尔式视角（Cartesian lens）来看待的教诲性阐述（didactic exposition）问题。
