Model transfer and disciplinary interconnections in history of economics: Making the case for an integrated approach

In this paper, we make the case for an integrated approach that combines philosophical analysis with historical research to write the recent history of economics as a history of interconnections between economics and other fields. Building on Hasok Chang’s cyclical model of integrating history and philosophy of science, we outline the key features of such an integrated approach vis-à-vis other historiographical traditions to argue that philosophical concepts can play an important epistemic role in historiography. To demonstrate the epistemic value of such an integrated approach, we apply it to two episodes of model transfer in the history of game theory, showing how it illuminates economics’ interconnections with other sciences.
